Nutritionist urges people to change one supermarket habit to boost their health

Leading nutritionist Dr Federica Amati has advised people to make a simple change in their supermarket shopping habits to enhance their health. During an interview with Fearne Cotton on her Happy Place podcast, Dr Amati recommended exploring the less popular food aisles in supermarkets for hidden health treasures. She emphasised the benefits of incorporating less common grains like pearl barley, spelt, and buckwheat into one’s diet. Dr Amati suggested, “Go to the really unsexy food aisles in the supermarket and find the pearl barley, find the spelt, find the buckwheat, they’re the easiest to cook, right.”

As an expert at ZOE and an accredited Association for Nutrition (AfN) professional, Dr Federica Amati highlighted the potential of these grains to replace traditional staples in various recipes. She shared, “I prefer like buckwheat and barley, for me they’re just the winners. Add those to your diet, so instead of rice maybe swap it for like a buckwheat when you can.” Dr Amati also emphasised the importance of whole fruits in one’s diet and commented on the prevalence of fruit juices over whole fruits in the UK.

In addition to advocating for whole grains and whole fruits, Dr Federica Amati touched upon the affordability and longevity of frozen fruits as a convenient option. She explained, “And, you know here, frozen fruits play a huge role because they’re cheaper, they don’t go off, I mean I love a raspberry but they really go fluffy in about five minutes.” The nutritionist’s recommendations aim to encourage individuals to make small changes in their shopping choices that can lead to significant health improvements.

In a world where convenience often dictates food choices, Dr Amati’s advice serves as a reminder to explore different aisles in the supermarket and consider healthier alternatives. By incorporating diverse grains and whole fruits into daily meals, individuals can boost their nutritional intake without compromising on taste or convenience. Making conscious choices in the supermarket can pave the way for a healthier and more balanced diet, ultimately contributing to overall well-being and vitality.
