A particular focus on literacy in schools with higher levels of deprivation has been highlighted as a key factor in this positive trend. The Scottish Government’s Strategic Equity Fund has provided financial support to help close the poverty-related attainment gap in Falkirk, with a specific emphasis on improving literacy outcomes. The additional funding has been used to deploy extra staff to work closely with schools facing the greatest levels of deprivation, leading to significant improvements in academic performance.
Scott Lavery, the quality improvement manager, emphasised the positive impact of this targeted support on student outcomes and noted plans to expand the initiative to include numeracy in the upcoming year. The report also revealed that the percentage of school leavers progressing to ‘positive destinations’ such as work, training, or higher education increased from 94.2% to 95.4%. Additionally, 85.5% of Falkirk pupils advanced to higher education, surpassing the national average of 81%, a commendable achievement according to Provost Robert Bissett.
