Scots mum ‘speechless’ after painful finger infection turned out to be leukaemia

A mother from Scotland was left stunned after what she thought was a painful finger infection turned out to be leukaemia. Peppie Scobbie, a 53-year-old mum-of-three from Larkhall, had been experiencing fatigue, a persistent chest infection, and unexplained bruising. Concerned about her symptoms, she visited her GP for a series of blood tests, which ultimately led to a diagnosis of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML).

Peppie immediately began chemotherapy, but her health took a turn for the worse when she contracted sepsis and pneumonia, leading to a three-week stay in intensive care in an induced coma. Despite the challenges, Peppie underwent two successful rounds of chemotherapy and entered remission in time for Christmas at home. However, her journey continued with two stem cell transplants, complications like ‘Graft vs Host’ disease, and ongoing treatments causing lasting effects such as mouth and gut damage, bone deterioration requiring knee replacements, and persistent pain.

Reflecting on her experience, Peppie admitted to feeling speechless and overwhelmed by her diagnosis, despite recognising the signs of leukaemia in hindsight. She acknowledged the mental toll of the journey, with moments of questioning “why me?” but striving to maintain a positive outlook. Peppie now undergoes regular blood tests to monitor her condition and awaits a hip replacement in the near future.

In the face of her battle with leukaemia, Peppie has welcomed funding from Leukaemia UK towards research aiming to develop improved and kinder therapies for those affected by this type of blood cancer. The charity awards John Goldman fellowships to early career researchers annually, providing £150,000 in funding and mentorship to drive discoveries from the laboratory to clinical practice. This year, projects focusing on AML at the University of Cambridge offer hope for advancements in treatment options, with researchers investigating the roles of proteins like ERG and genes like METTL1 in cancer progression.

Fiona Hazell, Chief Executive of Leukaemia UK, expressed gratitude towards supporters enabling research breakthroughs that could revolutionise outcomes for patients battling aggressive forms of blood cancer. The commitment to accelerating progress and enhancing the lives of individuals impacted by leukaemia embodies a collective effort to drive change and offer hope for a brighter future.
