A 60-year-old man from Wishaw, Garry Park, who found himself involved in the drug trade due to financial strain before Christmas has been granted leniency by a Sheriff. Park admitted to being concerned in the supply of cannabis on December 15 last year. Appearing at Hamilton Sheriff Court for sentencing, Park, residing at Rannoch Drive in Pather, was given a reprieve by Sheriff John Hamilton.
Police stopped Park’s van on Airbles Road in Motherwell, where they detected the smell of cannabis. A search led to the discovery of two vacuum bags of cannabis valued at £6,500 in the passenger seat footwell, along with two mobile phones and £8,450 in cash. Despite his involvement, Park was found to have no previous similar convictions and was reportedly suffering from various medical conditions.
In court, Park’s defence lawyer, Harvie Diamond, explained that his client made a foolish decision to transport drugs and money due to financial difficulties as the festive season approached. Diamond highlighted that Park had never engaged in such activities before and regretted his actions, ensuring he would not partake in such criminal activities in the future.
Sheriff John Hamilton acknowledged Park’s lapse in judgment, deeming it inappropriate to incarcerate someone of Park’s age, health status, and lack of prior criminal record. The Sheriff described Park’s choice to enter the drug trade at the age of 60 as foolish, and subsequently, imposed an eight-month electronic tagging order on Park. The tagging order prohibits Park from leaving his residence between 8pm and 6am daily as part of his sentence.
In a bid to rebuild his life, Garry Park was given this second chance by the Sheriff, signalling a chance for redemption and a fresh start for the 61-year-old man from Wishaw. Park’s remorse and the consequences of his actions will hopefully serve as a valuable lesson, deterring him and others from future illicit activities.
