Irate passengers ‘stage protest’ and halt train until staff let them on after finding doors locked

Passengers Express Discontent at Train Station, Demand Entry as Doors Remain Locked

Passengers at Manchester Piccadilly station caused a ruckus when they found the doors locked on a train they were trying to board. Among them was wheelchair user Susan Hackett and her daughter, Lou Monrow, who were informed that they had missed the train. In response, one passenger staged a protest by blocking the doors with his foot while others tried to reason with the railway staff to allow them entry.

A video capturing the incident showed the man defiantly standing with his foot on the train steps, arguing with the staff as Susan and Lou pleaded to be let on board. Despite the commotion, the passengers were eventually allowed onto the train, leading to a delay of around 15 minutes. The clip was later shared on TikTok, garnering over 1.2 million views and sparking a debate on whether the passengers were justified in their actions.

Lou Monrow, who had tickets for the specific 9.30 pm service to Crewe, criticised the station staff for being inflexible and causing unnecessary delays. She described the staff as ‘jobsworths’ and expressed support for the protest, stating that they were not being aggressive but merely passionate about boarding the train on time. Lou emphasised the importance of accommodating passengers who arrive just before departure and questioned the station’s handling of the situation, especially towards her wheelchair-bound mother.

In response to the incident, Network Rail apologised to the passengers for any inconvenience caused and explained that their policy requires doors to close 45 seconds before departure for safety and punctuality reasons. They maintained that the station team followed protocol by advising passengers they couldn’t board the moving train. Transport for Wales, the train operator, chose not to comment, while the British Transport Police have been contacted for further clarification.

Despite the controversy surrounding the incident, it highlights the challenges faced by passengers with disabilities and the importance of effective communication and flexibility in ensuring a smooth and inclusive railway experience for all travellers.
Insights: The incident at Manchester Piccadilly station sheds light on the frustration and challenges faced by passengers, particularly those with disabilities, when dealing with rigid rail policies. It underscores the need for greater understanding and accommodation to ensure a more seamless and equitable travel experience for all. Stations and rail operators should strive to balance safety protocols with empathy and flexibility to meet the diverse needs of passengers, especially in unexpected or time-sensitive situations.
