Emma Coulthurst, 37, embarked on a search for house swap opportunities with the goal of taking her Mario-Kart enthusiast six-year-old son to Super Nintendo World in Los Angeles, USA. Instead of the expected trade in the US, a family from Zeytinlik, Cyprus, offered an exchange through a Facebook group. After arranging flights costing £1,600, Emma and her family journeyed to Cyprus in July 2024. Their three-week stay in a three-bedroom villa with a pool involved savoring local delicacies, visiting waterparks, and even witnessing baby turtles. The total expenditure of £3,000 matched their UK summer holiday budget. Emma, an art supply company owner and Peak District holiday cottages proprietor, emphasised a desire for a lifestyle experience over a mere vacation, stating, “We said we wanted to live rather than holiday.”
Delighting in a relaxed and fulfilling sojourn, Emma and her husband Martin, 37, a construction project director, initiated a streak of holiday lets swapping in 2022 amid financial constraints during their house renovation. Despite the other family’s commitment to honor the swap despite purchasing a property in the UK, the Coulthursts anticipated and embarked on their Cyprus adventure in July 2024.
