‘Fit man’, 63, who threw away bowel screening kit given devastating cancer diagnosis

A 63-year-old man, Craig Allen from Cumbernauld, received a devastating diagnosis of stage 3 bowel cancer after initially discarding his bowel screening kit. Despite feeling “too fit” to concern himself with cancer, Craig threw away the kit sent to him at the age of 50, thinking he had no symptoms. However, two years later, he decided to take the test encouraged by his family, which revealed blood in his faeces. Subsequent investigations confirmed the presence of stage 3 bowel cancer.

Upon receiving the diagnosis, Craig expressed feeling “numb” but found solace in the unwavering support of his family and friends throughout the challenging journey of undergoing radiotherapy, chemotherapy, surgery, and temporary stoma bag placement. Despite the tough experience that shattered his confidence, Craig successfully battled cancer and emerged as a survivor.

Motivated by his personal ordeal, Craig has joined forces with Bowel Cancer UK to raise awareness about the importance of timely bowel cancer screening. Emphasizing the significance of early detection, he advocates for individuals not to neglect screening tests even in the absence of symptoms, citing his own experience as a testament to the life-saving potential of such screenings.

As part of his commitment to raising awareness, Craig will volunteer at a roadshow in Glasgow from November 19-21, where he will share his journey with visitors. Genevieve Edwards, Chief Executive at Bowel Cancer UK, commended Craig’s collaboration in promoting awareness and encouraged individuals to prioritize their bowel health through screening and proactive health measures.

The roadshow locations include The Forge Shopping Centre on November 19, Glasgow Central Train Station on November 20, and St Enoch Shopping Centre on November 21, providing opportunities for engaging discussions on bowel cancer, symptoms, screening, and risk reduction strategies.

In conclusion, Craig’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the unforeseen challenges that can arise and the critical role of proactive health measures in safeguarding well-being. His advocacy underscores the transformative power of early detection and the invaluable support networks in navigating health crises with resilience and determination.
