Matthew Bowen, a 35-year-old man, described spending £14,000 on dental work in Turkey as the “worst mistake of my life.” Bowen underwent a procedure for new crowns in January last year after suffering dental issues since breaking his jaw at the age of 19. Unable to afford the treatment in the UK, where it would have cost him £27,000, Bowen decided to seek treatment at the Aras Selcuk Advanced Dentistry clinic in Marmaris, Turkey, based on a recommendation from a friend.
The procedure involved the removal of 18 teeth and the insertion of 12 metal implants into his jawbone. Following the operation, Bowen experienced excruciating pain and complications, which made it difficult for him to even get out of bed. Despite these challenges, he continued with the treatment and returned in April 2023 to have porcelain crowns fitted. However, within weeks of the crowns being placed, Bowen noticed that they were falling apart and he had to undergo a second operation in August 2023.
Unfortunately, the issues persisted, and Bowen’s teeth continued to chip and crack, affecting ten of the crowns. Despite his efforts to take care of his teeth by following a soft diet and using night guards, the problems persisted, leaving him frustrated and in poor health. Bowen has since spent £6,200 on travel and accommodation costs on top of the initial £7,800 spent on the treatment in Turkey.
Attempts to seek corrective work on the NHS have been unsuccessful, as no UK dentist is willing to address the issues resulting from the treatment in Turkey. Bowen is now facing the prospect of another operation in Turkey to save his implants, at an additional cost of £4,000. Despite the financial and health challenges he has faced, Bowen remains determined to achieve a perfect smile.
In response to Bowen’s claims, Dr. Selcuk of the Aras Selcuk Advanced Dentistry clinic stated that he followed standard procedures and offered to replace the crowns free of charge. He advised Bowen to be cautious with his dental care to prevent further complications.
