US Fugitive Nicholas Rossi Scheduled for Jury Trial Date After Extradition from Scotland on Rape Charges
Nicholas Rossi, a US fugitive facing rape charges in America, has finally been given a jury trial date almost a year after his extradition from Scotland to Utah. The 37-year-old Rossi is accused of first-degree felony rape dating back to incidents in 2008. He was connected to the Utah County case through a sexual assault kit initiative in 2018. Another case in Salt Lake County emerged when a woman came forward after learning about his extradition.
His attorney, Samantha Dugan, mentioned that she is currently in discussions with prosecutors for a plea deal but requested a jury trial date as a precaution. The trial is now scheduled to commence on April 22, following jury selection on April 21, as reported locally. During a recent hearing where Rossi appeared virtually from the Utah County Jail wearing an oxygen mask, he waved at the end of the session without speaking.
Initially, Rossi tried to convince the court that he was Arthur Knight during his battle against extradition from Scotland, claiming mistaken identity. However, he recently acknowledged for the first time that he is indeed the same person as the alias Arthur Knight after DNA evidence confirmed his identity. Despite this, he denies allegations of fleeing to the UK in 2017 to avoid arrest.
Rossi, who allegedly faked his death, appeared in a Utah court speaking with an American accent, explaining that he left the country due to threats and later posed as an Irish orphan named Arthur Knight. His true identity was revealed when he sought medical treatment for Covid-19 at a Glasgow hospital in December 2021. Interpol-circulated images of his tattoos led to his arrest as staff recognized him.
Justice Secretary Angela Constance approved Rossi’s extradition in September 2023, and he was flown back to the US in January this year. In the upcoming Utah County case, a hearing is set for Tuesday where the judge is considering scheduling a jury trial.
This case underscores the complex nature of international extradition and legal battles faced by individuals accused of serious crimes like rape. It also highlights the importance of forensic evidence in linking suspects to criminal cases spanning different countries.
