**Heartfelt Tribute to Scots Dad Who Passed Away After MND Diagnosis**
A touching tribute is being planned by a grieving family to honour a cherished Scottish father who tragically lost his battle with motor neurone disease (MND) just two years after being diagnosed. Patrick ‘Pat’ McGachan, who hailed from Edinburgh, succumbed to the debilitating effects of MND in November 2023, leaving behind his sons Scott and Stuart, daughter Claire, and six grandchildren. In memory of their beloved father, Scott and Stuart are organising an electric Beatles Marathon for the second year in a row, aiming to raise funds for MND research.
MND is a progressive condition that impacts the nerves and brain, leading to muscle weakness and continual deterioration without a known cure, only management to alleviate symptoms. Pat, a devoted fan of The Beatles, first noticed signs of the disease in November 2021 when he encountered difficulties with motor skills. Scott, in an interview with Edinburgh Live, shared that Pat’s first indication was when he struggled to hold onto his guitar plectrum, a pivotal moment signalling the onset of MND. Despite the challenges, the family endeavoured to stay positive and supportive throughout Pat’s journey with the illness.
To support MND charities and raise awareness, Scott and Stuart arranged the inaugural Beatles Marathon in Edinburgh in November 2023, which brought together bands from across Scotland to celebrate the iconic music of the legendary band. As Pat’s health rapidly declined over the following months, the family held onto the hope that he would witness the Beatles Marathon, inspired by a similar event in Stuart’s current town of Columbus, Ohio. Unfortunately, Pat passed away at the age of 73 just before the planned event, robbing him of seeing the tribute he so deeply admired.
Scott fondly reminisces about his father’s unwavering love for The Beatles, not just for their music, but for the values they represented. The upcoming second Beatles Marathon at Portobello Town Hall will continue the legacy of celebrating the band that held a special place in Pat’s heart. With twelve Edinburgh bands taking on thirteen Beatles albums, attendees can expect a musical extravaganza on November 30, 2024. Scott, joined by his band Unrising Sun, and Stuart, travelling from the US, will perform to honour their father’s memory and raise funds for the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.
