Barry McGuigan’s life from tragic family death to ‘unifying’ marriage as he enters I’m A Celeb

Former world champion boxer Barry McGuigan is set to join the lineup for the upcoming 2024 series of ‘I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!’ as the latest group of celebrities get ready to face the challenges of the Australian jungle. McGuigan, who previously held titles in the boxing world and was also a winner of BBC Sports Personality of the Year, will represent the sports world amongst other well-known personalities such as McFly singer Danny Jones and Strictly star Oti Mabuse.

Apart from his achievements in the ring, McGuigan’s life has been marked by personal tragedies and challenges. In July 2019, his daughter Danika, aged only 33, passed away after a brief battle with cancer. Danika had previously battled acute lymphoid leukaemia when she was just 11 years old but had recovered and pursued a career in acting. Her untimely death left McGuigan and his family devastated, with the former boxer admitting that he will never fully come to terms with the loss of his daughter.

Despite the heartache caused by the loss of Danika, McGuigan’s marriage to his wife Sandra has stood the test of time, lasting over 40 years. The couple, who married during the troubled period of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, have faced challenges due to their different backgrounds – McGuigan is Catholic while Sandra comes from a Protestant family. Their marriage has been a source of strength for McGuigan, who sees family as the most important aspect of his life.

Over the years, McGuigan’s relationship with former boxer Carl Frampton, whom he once managed, turned sour, leading to a multi-million pound legal battle. The dispute ended up in court with Frampton alleging that McGuigan withheld earnings from his fights, while McGuigan claimed that Frampton breached his contract by leaving the organisation. The breakdown of their relationship highlighted the complexities and challenges in the world of sports management.

As McGuigan prepares to enter the jungle and face a new set of challenges on reality TV, his life story serves as a reminder of the highs and lows that come with success in the sporting world. His resilience in the face of personal tragedy and professional challenges is a testament to his strength of character and determination to overcome adversity. As audiences tune in to watch McGuigan on ‘I’m A Celebrity’, they will have the opportunity to get to know the man behind the boxing gloves and gain a deeper understanding of the journey that has shaped him into the person he is today.
