Woman diagnosed with brain tumour loses husband to same disease six months later

Julie Mccullough, a 58-year-old woman, faced a devastating loss when she was diagnosed with a brain tumour just months before her husband succumbed to the same disease. Julie’s journey began with severe headaches and intense pain in her arm, leading to the discovery of two brain tumours. Following surgery to remove the largest tumour, she was diagnosed with meningioma and continues to grapple with an uncertain future.

Tragically, Julie’s husband, Robert, 66, collapsed at her mother’s home only two months after her own operation. A CT scan revealed that he, too, had a large brain tumour. Given a prognosis of just two months to live, Robert passed away in July 2023, leaving Julie and their family heartbroken. The couple, both former nurses from Newtownards, Northern Ireland, found themselves facing a harrowing battle against the same illness within a short span of time.

Julie reflected on the sudden turn of events, expressing disbelief at the devastating impact the disease had on their lives. She recounted the moments of illness that led to their diagnoses, sharing the challenges she faced during her recovery from surgery. Julie’s own health struggles, including ongoing seizures, have hindered her ability to return to her nursing career, leaving her to navigate an uncertain future.

Despite the profound loss and personal challenges, Julie is determined to raise awareness for brain tumour research. She has embarked on the 99 Miles in November challenge to support the Brain Tumour Research charity and honour her late husband’s memory. Julie’s resilience and dedication to advocating for others impacted by brain tumours serve as a poignant reminder of the urgent need for continued research and support for those affected by this devastating illness.

The story of Julie and Robert Mccullough underscores the indiscriminate nature of brain tumours and the profound impact they have on individuals and families. As Julie strives to make a difference in her community and beyond, her commitment to raising awareness and funds for research offers hope for the future of those battling similar challenges.

In a time of heartache and uncertainty, Julie’s strength shines through as she honours her husband’s memory and advocates for others affected by brain tumours. Her dedication to helping others serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration in the face of life’s most difficult trials.
