A lesser-known chopping board mistake that may be hazardous – Daily Record
When it comes to chopping boards, many people believe that one material is superior to another, but experts have revealed the truth about a potentially dangerous mistake.
For individuals who do a lot of cooking, the importance of a good chopping board is well understood. The preparation process can significantly impact one’s culinary skills, making high-quality equipment essential for achieving the perfect dish. Solid cookware, razor-sharp knives, and other kitchen tools are crucial for skilled cooking. Naturally, a decent chopping board to dice your ingredients is an absolute must-have before adding everything to your pot.
However, there exists a common misconception about the best material for your chopping board, with one specific type turning out to be an unexpected breeding ground for germs. For those without a dishwasher, it may be advisable to reconsider your chopping board choice.
A segment from the classic BBC show QI has recently resurfaced on TikTok, where the show’s guest panel explores the topic of chopping boards and the best material for combating germs, as reported by the Express. Host Sandi Toksvig posed a question to the group, asking, “To prevent bacteria what should your chopping board be made of?” Surprisingly, the answer is not plastic, but wood instead.
Guest panellist and comedian Sara Pascoe contributed by stating, “For ages, they thought the plastic ones were better. People thought that wood has these little grooves, and bacteria would go in there and live and multiply.” She further explained, “But then they actually found that plastic was much worse.”
Sandi Toksvig supported the statement by revealing that “99.9% of the bacteria that is added to a wooden chopping board has disappeared within three minutes of application.” She pointed out that on plastic boards, the bacteria remained present, displaying a microscopic image of harmful bacteria on large screens.
She highlighted that the ‘only good thing’ about plastic chopping boards is their suitability for cleaning in the dishwasher, which is not an option for wooden boards. The intense heat of the dishwasher should eliminate any harmful germs that remain on the surface after food preparation. Sandi concluded by emphasizing the importance of washing the boards and replacing them when they show signs of wear.
