A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Birmingham has shed light on the potential benefits of incorporating green tea and cocoa into one’s diet to counteract the negative effects of consuming fatty foods, especially during stressful times. The study suggests that beverages rich in flavanols, such as green tea and cocoa, can help protect the body from the impact of stress, even after consuming high-fat meals.
Previous research by the team at the University of Birmingham revealed that high-fat foods can have detrimental effects on vascular function and oxygen delivery to the brain, particularly under stress. However, components like flavanols found in green tea and cocoa were found to have a protective effect on vascular health during everyday stress. The latest study indicates that consuming cocoa rich in flavanols alongside a fatty meal may help mitigate some of the negative effects of such foods on the vascular system during stressful situations.
Dr Catarina Rendeiro, Assistant Professor in Nutritional Sciences, explained the rationale behind the study, stating that people tend to opt for high-fat foods when under stress, which can impair the body’s vascular recovery. By adding a high-flavanol food to a fatty meal, the researchers aimed to observe if this could alleviate the negative impact of stress on the body. Rosalind Baynham, who led the study as a research fellow, highlighted the health benefits of flavanols found in various fruits, vegetables, tea, and nuts, emphasising their role in regulating blood pressure and protecting cardiovascular health.
In the study, participants were provided with a breakfast consisting of high-fat foods, such as butter croissants and cheese, along with either a high-flavanol cocoa drink or a low-flavanol cocoa drink. The researchers then assessed the participants’ vascular function, cardiovascular activity, and prefrontal cortex tissue oxygenation during a stress-inducing mental maths test. The findings, published in the journal Food and Function, indicated that the high-flavanol cocoa drink was more effective in mitigating the decline in vascular function post-stress compared to the low-flavanol option.
Dr Rendeiro highlighted the importance of consuming foods rich in flavanols to counteract the impact of poor food choices on the vascular system. She recommended opting for minimally processed cocoa powder and incorporating beverages like green tea and black tea, as well as berries, into one’s diet to achieve a daily flavanol intake of 400 to 600 mg. The study’s co-author, Professor Jet Veldhuijzen van Zanten, emphasised the significance of making small dietary changes, especially during stressful periods, to protect one’s health from the adverse effects of stress.
