Speeding Policeman Pleads Guilty to Causing the Death of Motherwell Mother in Fatal Accident
A tragic incident unfolded in Motherwell as a police officer, PC Jamie Hamill, confessed to being responsible for the demise of a mother of three in a fatal collision. The officer was driving at a speed of more than 50 miles per hour in a residential area when the van he was driving struck Margaret McCarron, leading to her untimely death. Despite Hamill’s efforts to administer CPR at the scene, the 58-year-old victim passed away shortly after being rushed to the hospital.
In a court hearing, it was revealed that PC Hamill, who had only been in the police force for 18 months, acknowledged that his careless driving and exceeding the speed limit on September 19, 2021, resulted in Margaret McCarron’s tragic death. The court learned that Hamill had activated his blue lights to pursue a suspect driver without insurance, subsequently losing sight of the vehicle before deciding to proceed to the driver’s residence with a colleague.
Evidence presented in court indicated that Hamill was captured on CCTV driving at 52 miles per hour in a 30-mile-per-hour zone. As he approached Merry Street, his speed decreased to approximately 40 miles per hour near the location of the collision. The CCTV footage displayed Hamill driving past Margaret as she attempted to cross the road, ultimately striking her with the police van.
Following the collision, Hamill and his colleague attempted to provide aid to Margaret, with Hamill even radioing for an ambulance. Unfortunately, the injuries sustained by Margaret were fatal, leading to her death despite the efforts made to save her life. The court was informed that the specific cause of death was severe neck and chest injuries sustained during the incident.
An investigation into the fatal crash conducted by the Police Investigation and Review Commissioner highlighted that Hamill’s speed increased the risk of a fatality by four times compared to driving within the speed limit. Despite claims of the lights from oncoming vehicles affecting his visibility, Hamill’s excessive speed significantly elevated the likelihood of a tragic outcome.
In light of the circumstances, the family of Margaret McCarron, who worked as a carer, announced their intentions to pursue legal action against the police following her passing. Expressing deep remorse for his actions, Hamill’s defence lawyer stressed his client’s sincere regret and sorrow for the heartbreaking loss inflicted upon Margaret’s loved ones.
Sheriff Louise Gallacher, presiding over the case, deferred sentencing to allow for the compilation of background reports and an assessment of electronic tagging suitability. Additionally, Hamill, who had a prior driving conviction from 2014, was immediately disqualified from driving but granted bail pending further court proceedings.
