Kirkmahoe SWI Celebrates 100 Years with Special Event
Members of Kirkmahoe SWI recently gathered at the Woodlands House Hotel to celebrate a significant milestone – the institute’s 100th anniversary. President Doreen Martin welcomed everyone to the event, which was graced by special guests including Mary Burney, SWI national chairman; Mima Telfer, Dumfriesshire president, and Jane Chalmers, the Cairn Valley president. Together, they cut the cake and unveiled the Kirkmahoe Parish Collage, a representation of the Parish of Kirkmahoe that included important landmarks and was worked on by all members over the summer. Margaret Wilson and Doreen unveiled the finished collage, showcasing the institute’s rich history.
During the celebration, Doreen and Fiona Sweeney shared anecdotes from old minutes, highlighting how the institute persevered through tough times. Activities such as a potato peeling competition, butchering demonstrations, and evening entertainment were mentioned, reflecting the members’ dedication to making the most of their gatherings. The youngest member, Emma Johnstone, had the honour of cutting the cake, while Mary Burney congratulated the institute on its centenary and toasted to the SWI and Kirkmahoe’s future. Joan Stroud, a long-serving member, recited a poem she had written, adding a personal touch to the event.
The night continued with current and past members enjoying a delightful meal, reminiscing and celebrating the institute’s achievements over the past century.
