North Lanarkshire Reports Higher Incidents of Domestic Abuse than National Average
Statistics released by the Scottish Government have revealed that the rate of domestic abuse incidents recorded by police in North Lanarkshire is above the Scottish average. The data shows that the police recorded 127 crimes per 10,000 of the population in the region, while the national average stands at 116 incidents. South Lanarkshire, on the other hand, recorded incidents at the average rate of 116 during the 2023-24 period.
The definition of domestic abuse used by Police Scotland encompasses various forms of abuse, including physical, verbal, sexual, psychological, or financial abuse that could amount to criminal conduct within a relationship. This could involve partners, whether married, cohabiting, in a civil partnership, or ex-partners, and the abuse may occur at home, elsewhere, or even online.
Across Scotland, there were 63,867 incidents of domestic abuse recorded by the police in 2023-24, marking a three per cent increase compared to the previous year. The most commonly reported type of crime within domestic abuse incidents was common assault, which accounted for 31 per cent of all crimes and offenses recorded.
At a local level, Dundee City, West Dunbartonshire, and West Lothian reported the highest incident rates. Gender-wise, 81 per cent of incidents involved a female victim and a male suspected perpetrator. Moreover, 90 per cent of all reported domestic abuse incidents took place in a home or dwelling, with half of the victims being ex-partners.
Siobhian Brown MSP, Victims Minister, highlighted the abhorrent nature of domestic abuse and stressed the importance of reporting such incidents. The Scottish Government is actively supporting victims by providing funding to Women’s Aid groups and the Scotland Domestic Abuse and Forced Marriage Helpline.
