West Dunbartonshire has recently been identified as the region with the second-highest rate of domestic abuse incidents in Scotland. According to new figures released by Police Scotland in a report published by the Scottish Government, West Dunbartonshire recorded 1,357 domestic abuse incidents in the 2023/24 period, marking a nearly 10% increase from the previous year’s 1,237 incidents. This spike in incidents has placed West Dunbartonshire as the second-highest region for domestic abuse incidents per 10,000 of the population, with a rate of 153 incidents, just behind Dundee City with a rate of 183 incidents.
In comparison, the Argyll and Bute Council area, which covers Helensburgh, saw a decrease in domestic abuse incidents from 687 in the previous year to 677 in 2023/24. Of the incidents recorded in West Dunbartonshire, 45% involved a crime or offence being committed, surpassing the national average of 38%. Similarly, in Argyll and Bute, this figure was even higher at 48%. The definition of domestic abuse used by Police Scotland includes various forms of abuse such as physical, verbal, sexual, psychological, or financial abuse occurring within a relationship.
Nationally, the total number of police-recorded domestic abuse incidents in Scotland reached 63,867 in 2023-24, representing a 3% increase from the previous year. The majority of victims (83%) were female, with 81% of incidents involving a female victim and a male suspect. 17% of victims were male, while 15% of incidents involved a male victim and a female suspect. Additionally, 3% of domestic abuse incidents involved victims and suspected perpetrators of the same gender.
