Dumfries celebrates the start of the festive season with the ‘Lights of Hope’ switch-on event, marking the countdown to Christmas with a spectacular light display. Pastor Mark Smith from Dumfries Partnership Action Group organised the town’s Christmas lights switch-on event, which drew in massive crowds. The event featured a day of entertainment showcasing local talent, creating a fun-filled atmosphere for people of all ages to enjoy.
For the second consecutive year, Dumfries Partnership Action Group curated the Christmas festival, aiming to bring the community together for a day of celebration. The event included performances by local school choirs, such as Troqueer Primary, and entertainment by various groups like River of Life Youth and Dalscone Donkeys. The town centre came alive with activities including Santa’s sleigh pulled by real reindeer, illuminated tractors, and performances by artists like Alice Faye, the UK finalist of Channel 4’s ‘The Piano 2024’.
The festive spirit continued at the Planestanes, featuring artists like the Dumfries Town Band, the Theatre Royal panto cast, and various dance groups, all compered by radio personality Lee Medd. Pastor Mark Smith expressed his delight at the community coming together to kick off the Christmas season, especially with the addition of real reindeer pulling Santa’s sleigh, bringing joy to all in attendance.
In addition to the town centre festivities, hundreds of white ‘Lights of Hope’ were strung along the Whitesands, the river, and bridges to illuminate the town during the dark winter months. Sponsored by Mark Jardine of the People’s Project, these lights symbolise hope and positivity, providing a beacon of light during the colder seasons. The organisers of Dumfries Partnership Action Group extended their gratitude to everyone involved in making the Christmas switch-on event a success, recognising the support of partners, businesses, and the community.
The ‘Lights of Hope’ will remain lit throughout December, January, and February to uplift spirits and brighten the town during the winter season. The event truly captured the festive spirit and showcased the community spirit in Dumfries as families, children, and visitors gathered to enjoy the celebrations, creating cherished memories for all in attendance.
