A recent report from North Lanarkshire Council has highlighted the progress being made in local schools. The standards and quality report for 2023-2024 revealed that eleven inspection reports on the council’s schools were published, with an impressive 82 per cent receiving positive feedback. The majority of parents expressed satisfaction with their children’s schools as well.
Among the achievements outlined in the report, 94 out of 109 pupils who participated in the Brighter Futures programme successfully completed it, with almost all transitioning to positive outcomes like employment or further education upon leaving school. Additionally, 34 schools were awarded the NL Enterprising Schools accolade, and attendance at Future Fridays events has more than doubled since 2022.
The report also highlighted improvements in various areas of education, such as the implementation of a new play-based learning model and efforts to increase access to Gaelic language lessons and cultural activities for families. Over one third of schools in North Lanarkshire have received the Digital Schools Award Scotland, exceeding the initial target set, with 32 more schools working towards this recognition.
Education support initiatives have proven beneficial, with family engagement support assistants working with over 400 pupils to improve school attendance, and more than 200 families receiving ongoing support. Furthermore, over 100 pupils aged 10-18 have benefitted from the online mental health service Kooth, enabling them to access one-to-one discussions with support staff.
While there has been a slight decline in academic attainment overall, in line with national trends, standards remain higher than in 2019. The report was formally endorsed by the council’s education, children, and families committee, reflecting a positive outlook for education in the region.
