Sixth tourist dies in Laos after ‘toxic vodka shots’ as hostel owner arrested

A tragic incident in Laos has claimed the lives of six tourists, with the latest victim identified as 19-year-old Australian teenager Holly Bowles. Holly had been in critical condition in a Bangkok hospital after consuming suspected methanol-laced alcohol in Laos over a week ago. Her family confirmed her passing in a statement, expressing their sorrow at the loss of their “beautiful girl.”

Holly’s death follows the deaths of her friend Bianca Jones, British woman Simone White, an American man, and two Danish tourists, all of whom also fell ill after consuming the toxic alcohol. Laotian authorities have detained the manager and owner of a hostel linked to the case. While no charges have been filed yet, several individuals have been taken in for questioning.

The use of methanol in alcoholic drinks, either as a cheaper alternative to ethanol or as a by-product of poorly distilled liquor, can lead to severe poisoning or even death. In response to the incidents, the US State Department issued a health alert for travellers in Laos, warning of the dangers of methanol poisoning in Vang Vieng.

Laos, a popular destination for backpackers seeking adventure, has been shaken by these tragic events. Concerns have been raised among locals and tourists alike, with many expressing disbelief that such a tragedy could occur in the town of Vang Vieng. Neil Farmiloe, a long-term resident, described the incident as unprecedented and deeply saddening.

The incident, which occurred after a night of drinking at the Nana Backpacker Hostel, has prompted increased vigilance among travellers in the region. As investigations continue and authorities work to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths, the community mourns the lives lost and hopes for justice to be served.

In conclusion, the devastating loss of young lives in Laos due to toxic alcohol serves as a stark reminder of the dangers present in unfamiliar environments. Travellers are urged to exercise caution and remain vigilant while exploring new destinations, as tragedies like these highlight the importance of prioritising safety and awareness.
