South Lanarkshire Council Extends Birthday Wishes to Hamilton Accies
In a show of appreciation for a remarkable milestone, South Lanarkshire Council has officially congratulated Hamilton Accies on their 150th birthday. The council passed a motion on Thursday to commend the local football club for achieving this significant anniversary. Dating back to late 1874, Hamilton Academical Football Club was established by the rector James Blacklock and students from Hamilton Academy.
Acknowledging Hamilton Accies as one of the oldest senior football clubs in Scotland, the motion highlighted the club’s unique origin as the only professional team in the UK to have emerged from a school squad. Over the past 150 years, Hamilton Accies have competed in all four divisions of the league. Initially playing at various locations in Hamilton, the club later made its home at Douglas Park from 1888 to 1994.
