A British grandmother tragically collapsed and died after consuming tea containing a psychedelic drug while on holiday in Bolivia. Maureen Rainford, 54, experienced a fatal heart attack following the intake of Ayahuasca, a substance with hallucinogenic properties. Ayahuasca, also known as yage, is a blend of plants that induces visions, energy, and euphoria and is illegal in various countries including the UK and the US.
Maureen, from Romford, east London, had embarked on an £800 retreat at the Ayahuasca and San Pedro Pisatahua Retreat in the Bolivian Amazon. Shortly after drinking the tea, Maureen felt unwell, with her heart rate and breathing dropping rapidly. Despite attempts at CPR, Maureen passed away before a doctor could arrive on the scene. Her daughter, Rochel, highlighted the lack of medical support in such remote areas when administering hallucinogenic substances.
The retreat official mentioned that Maureen’s death was due to a medical emergency unrelated to Ayahuasca. Following the incident, Rochel arranged for her mother’s body to be repatriated to the UK and held a funeral to honour her memory. In response to the tragedy, a fundraiser was established to assist Maureen’s family financially, aiming to ease their burdens during this challenging time.
