Probe Launched into Jail Death of Scottish Killer Who Murdered Vulnerable Friend in Own Home
A probe has been initiated into the jail death of a Scottish man who was serving a life sentence for murdering his friend in his own home. Darrin Callander, aged 41, passed away on September 18, 2021, at HMP Shotts near Glasgow. Callander had been convicted for the brutal attack on his friend Brian Scott, 54, at a property in Dumfries in April 2013. The victim, known as Tucker, suffered severe injuries including smashed ribs, a ruptured spleen, fractured vertebrae, and brain damage.
The Procurator Fiscal, Les Brown, has announced that a Fatal Accident Inquiry (FAI) will be conducted into Callander’s death. The preliminary hearing is scheduled to take place at Hamilton Sheriff Court on January 7, 2025. Callander was sentenced to a minimum of 14 and a half years in prison after admitting to the murder of Brian Scott in 2013.
During the trial at the High Court in Glasgow, it was revealed that Callander and another man, Robert Burgess, had been drinking with the victim when Callander suddenly attacked Brian, leaving him defenseless. Despite pleas from Burgess to stop, Callander continued the five-minute assault. The following morning, Callander returned to find Brian’s lifeless body but failed to seek help, leading to the discovery of the crime scene by other friends.
Callander’s minimum prison term was initially set at nine years and nine months but was increased after an appeal revealed his criminal history involving violence, weapons possession, and obstructing law enforcement. Advocate depute Alex Prentice QC described Callander’s attack as “brutal and sustained” during the court proceedings.
Lord Justice Clerk Lord Carloway added five years to Callander’s sentence due to his previous convictions. Callander, known for his violent past, had promised to confess to the murder but remained silent when he went to a police station. His death in prison has sparked an investigation to ascertain the circumstances leading to his demise, shedding light on the tragic consequences of his actions.
