The Scottish Liberal Democrats have taken a firm stance against any budget proposed by the Scottish National Party (SNP) that includes spending on independence. Party leader Alex Cole-Hamilton stated that he would instruct his MSPs to vote down a budget that allocated even a small amount towards the constitution. Cole-Hamilton highlighted the significant ideological differences between the SNP and the Lib Dems, making it challenging for the two parties to find common ground.
With Finance Secretary Shona Robison set to present the budget on December 4, the SNP, holding 62 MSPs, three short of a majority, will require support from opposition parties to pass their spending plans since the end of the Bute House Agreement with the Greens. The Scottish Lib Dems, with four MSPs, could play a pivotal role in determining the budget’s fate. Cole-Hamilton emphasised that his party would not support any budget that diverts funding towards independence initiatives, considering it a misuse of public funds.
According to campaign group Scotland in Union, the Scottish Government has spent up to £3.5 million on independence-related activities since the 2021 Holyrood elections. Cole-Hamilton acknowledged that although discussions with the Scottish Government regarding the budget have shown some positive signs, significant disparities remain in their financial perspectives. The Scottish Greens have expressed their insistence on including independence spending in the budget, further complicating the budget negotiation process.
In summary, the Scottish Liberal Democrats have drawn a clear line in the sand, asserting their opposition to any budget that allocates funds towards independence. The upcoming budget proposal presents a challenging task for the SNP to secure support from opposition parties, especially with the Lib Dems holding a potential swing vote in the decision-making process. The ideological differences between the parties underscore the complexity of reaching consensus on crucial fiscal matters, ultimately shaping Scotland’s financial landscape for the coming year.
