Nature reserve warden, David Anderson, was recently invited as the guest speaker at the Motherwell Photographic Society in an engaging presentation titled “RSPB Baron’s Haugh: Creating a Better, Wetter Future”. The talk delved into the rich history of the Baron’s Haugh Nature Reserve in Motherwell, highlighting its unique features that make it a special place for both wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
Covering an expansive 107-hectare area, Baron’s Haugh attracts around 40,000 visitors annually who are drawn to its abundant wildlife and scenic woodland walks. During his presentation, David shed light on the diverse wildlife inhabiting the reserve, their natural habitats, as well as the ongoing challenges posed by climate change. Over the years, the reserve has taken proactive steps to enhance its environment, including the creation of new wetlands and three hectares of wildflower meadows.
Attendees were treated to a visual journey through videos showcasing the conservation efforts carried out by the dedicated team at Baron’s Haugh, alongside a glimpse of the diverse wildlife that thrives within the reserve. Following an interactive question-and-answer session, Rodger Shearer, the club vice-president, expressed gratitude to David for his insightful presentation and commended his tireless work at the nature reserve.
Looking ahead, the Motherwell Photographic Society is gearing up for its next meeting on Thursday, November 28, featuring award-winning photographer George Robertson. Robertson will share his experiences through a captivating presentation titled “The Snows of Kilimanjaro – Trekking on Africa’s Highest Mountain”. The society welcomes photography enthusiasts of all skill levels to join their gatherings held at the Holytown Community Centre every Thursday at 7.30pm.
