An Italian school teacher who sexually assaulted a Ryanair stewardess on a flight to Edinburgh has managed to avoid jail time. Sebastian Russo, a 39-year-old science teacher from the Czech Republic who was visiting his mother in Scotland for Christmas, touched the cabin crew member inappropriately while she was assisting another passenger on a flight from Krakow, Poland. Despite the offence, Russo received a fine and was placed on the Sex Offenders Register.
During his court appearance at Edinburgh Sheriff Court, Russo admitted to the sexual assault, expressing remorse for his actions. His solicitor, Anna Mackay, explained that Russo had been drinking alcohol on the flight and committed the assault without any valid reason. The court was informed that Russo, who is expecting his first child with his partner, was deeply embarrassed by the incident.
Sheriff John Cook presiding over the case acknowledged the severity of the assault but noted that the physical contact was brief, allowing the cabin crew member to continue her duties despite the distress caused. As part of his sentencing, Russo was fined £940 and required to register as a sex offender for five years.
Russo’s inappropriate behaviour was brought to light when he placed his hand on the stewardess’s buttocks during the flight’s landing at Edinburgh Airport. The incident was promptly reported, leading to his arrest upon arrival. While the court accepted Russo’s guilty plea for the sexual assault charge, other allegations of disorderly conduct and being drunk on board were dismissed.
