Two beauticians from Scotland have been caught smuggling £6,500 worth of cocaine and Ecstasy into the Creamfields festival. Erin Hobdell, 21, and Kira McNicol, 23, were found with drugs hidden on their person at the music festival in Runcorn, Cheshire in 2022.
Hobdell was discovered with 42 knotted plastic bags containing cocaine and ecstasy tablets concealed in her waistband, while McNicol had 143 Ecstasy tablets hidden in her private parts. The pair, who had travelled 230 miles from Scotland to attend the festival with a group of friends, claimed they were pressured by their coach party to carry the drugs and insisted they had no intention of selling them.
At Chester Crown Court, Hobdell pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply class A drugs cocaine and MDMA, as well as class B drug ketamine, and was given a suspended 21-month prison sentence. McNicol pleaded guilty to possession of MDMA with intent to supply and received a suspended 18-month jail term. Both women also had to complete 200 hours of unpaid work.
The judge acknowledged that the women were influenced by others in the coach party and showed naivety in their actions. He emphasised the seriousness of drug-taking at festivals like Creamfields, highlighting the risks of harm and even death associated with drug use. The prosecutor noted that the women were persuaded by their friends on the coach to carry the drugs, although they were not the actual suppliers.
In mitigation, the defence counsel highlighted the young age of the women at the time of the offence and the emotional toll the proceedings had taken on them. They both expressed remorse for their actions and were deemed to be at low risk of re-offending.
The delay in charging the women was also considered a factor in their favour. Despite the judge’s acknowledgment of the pressure they faced, he emphasised the gravity of their actions and the potential consequences of drug smuggling. Overall, the women were spared jail time but were given suspended sentences and community service.
