Scots residents fume as ‘tankers pump sewage at bottom of their gardens’

Residents in Scotland are expressing their anger and frustration as tankers are being used to pump raw sewage at the bottom of their gardens. This concerning situation has arisen due to the construction of nearly 100 houses without a mains sewage link, leading to waste collections occurring on land designated as a children’s play area. The tankers arrive every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday to pump sewage out of an underground container, causing unbearable smells and disruptive noise for residents in Waterloo Place, Elphinstone, East Lothian.

The housing developers, Bellway, were unable to connect the new homes to a mains sewage system as planned, resulting in ongoing sewage issues that have significantly impacted the quality of life for local residents. The situation has prompted concerns among residents and East Lothian councillors, leading to a delay in approving further housing developments on the estate. Beyond the sewage problem, flooding issues have also been reported by residents in homes south of the newly built houses, further exacerbating the challenges faced by the community.

Residents are now demanding more decisive action to address these pressing issues before any additional housing projects are greenlit. The lack of proper infrastructure and drainage solutions has left gardens waterlogged and residents feeling frustrated with the ongoing disruptions caused by the sewage tankers and flooding incidents. Concerns have also been raised about proposed construction plans that involve cutting down woodlands and encroaching on amenity land.

Bellway, the housing developer, has acknowledged the problems and stated that they are working on installing pumps on-site to alleviate the need for tankers while awaiting approval for roadworks to connect to the main sewage system. However, residents remain sceptical and adamant that a comprehensive investigation and resolution are required before any further development takes place in the area.

The situation in Elphinstone serves as a stark reminder of the importance of proper planning and infrastructure development to support growing communities. It highlights the need for proactive measures to address sewage, drainage, and environmental impact concerns to ensure the well-being and quality of life for residents. Ultimately, the welfare of residents must be prioritised, and sustainable solutions must be implemented to mitigate the adverse effects of inadequate infrastructure on local communities.
