Motorcycle gang member planted pipe bomb under rival’s father’s van in ‘bizarre feud’

Motorcycle gang member sentenced to nine years in prison for planting a pipe bomb under a rival’s father’s van in a “bizarre feud.” Daniel Laponder, 43, targeted David Rollo senior’s work van in Lennoxtown, East Dunbartonshire, on June 8, 2024. Mr. Rollo’s son is a member of the Blue Angels Motorcycle Club, while Laponder had previously been part of the club but formed his own Mad Dogs Motorcycle Club after leaving.
The High Court in Glasgow revealed that the two rival clubs were engaged in a feud when Laponder placed the bomb. Laponder admitted to wilful fire-raising and possessing a shotgun without authorization. Judge Lord Arthurson described the background to the offenses as “somewhat bizarre” due to the feud between the two motorcycle clubs.
Police discovered the bomb under Mr. Rollo’s van, leading to a major incident and evacuation until the bomb squad made it safe. The device was described as a viable pipe bomb made of petrol and ball bearings with a remote activation system. Laponder’s DNA and fingerprints were found on the bomb components.
Laponder was traced to his residence on a barge in Kirkintilloch, where a loaded shotgun was recovered along with materials similar to those used in the bomb. Despite Laponder’s claims that he had retired from the Blue Angels, evidence linked him to the crime. The court heard that Laponder’s actions were in retaliation for previous targeted attacks by the rival gang.
Laponder’s defense emphasized his remorse and regret for his actions, acknowledging the impact on his family and the community. His prior convictions include violence in England and road traffic offenses. Laponder was fined and disqualified from driving in a previous drink driving incident in 2022.
The sentencing shed light on the dangerous consequences of feuds within motorcycle gangs, highlighting the need for law enforcement to intervene and prevent such acts of violence. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining peace and order within communities, as well as the consequences of engaging in criminal activities as part of a gang feud.
