Girl ‘kidnapped by bus driver’ aged 7 escapes from 12 years of captivity

A 7-year-old girl who was allegedly kidnapped by a bus driver has miraculously escaped from 12 years of captivity. The suspect, Carlos Humberto Grisales Higuita, has been arrested for allegedly abducting and sexually abusing the young woman. It is reported that he used his position as a bus driver to lure the victim in 2012 when she was just seven years old. After the abduction, he allegedly kept her hidden in properties in Medellin and Bello, Colombia.

During the girl’s captivity, she remained untraceable to her family and did not attend school. It was not until she turned 16 that she confronted Grisales Higuita and managed to break free from him in February of this year. The accused abuser was apprehended in Medellin and is facing charges that include raping a minor and producing child pornography. He has refuted the allegations and is currently in police custody.

The prosecutor’s office stated, “The man, who worked as a school bus driver, allegedly detained a 7-year-old girl in early 2012 and took her to a house in the city centre. He allegedly psychologically manipulated and sexually assaulted her, making her believe that such behaviour was normal.” Cases of child sex abuse in Medellin and the Antioquia region have sparked outrage in Colombia, with reports indicating a high number of alleged sexual abuse cases against minors.

The girl’s bravery in confronting her captor and seeking freedom after 12 years is a testament to her strength and resilience. Cases like this highlight the importance of raising awareness about child abduction and sexual abuse, and the need for stringent measures to protect vulnerable individuals, especially minors.

In a world where such heinous crimes persist, it is crucial for communities and authorities to work together to ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals, particularly children who are more susceptible to exploitation. Our collective vigilance and proactive efforts can help prevent such tragic incidents and create a safer environment for everyone.

Let us continue to support and empower survivors of abuse, while also advocating for justice and accountability for perpetrators. Together, we can strive towards a society where every individual, regardless of age or gender, can live free from fear and harm.
