Heading Footballs Could Cause More Damage to Brain Than Previously Thought, Warns New Research
A new study from the US suggests that heading footballs could have a more significant impact on the brain than previously believed. The six-year campaign in Scotland to ban headers from football has been spearheaded by Amanda Kopel, the widow of the late footballer Frank Kopel. Frank Kopel, who passed away from dementia believed to be linked to heading the ball during his career, has been a focal point in the discussion around the dangers of head impacts in football. The recent study conducted at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York utilised advanced MRI techniques to examine the effects of head impacts on the brain’s microstructure near its surface.
The research focused on the association between repetitive head impacts and a degenerative brain condition known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Professor Michael Lipton, the senior author of the study, highlighted that the effects of repeated head impacts in sports are more extensive than previously understood and can affect brain regions susceptible to CTE pathology. The study compared brain MRIs of 352 amateur football players with those of 77 non-contact sport athletes, revealing abnormalities in the white matter of the brains of football players who frequently headed the ball.
Abnormalities were particularly evident in the frontal lobe of the brain, a region prone to damage from trauma, especially during activities like heading the ball. Additionally, the study found that more repetitive head impacts were associated with reduced verbal learning and cognitive performance. The research showed that even without a history of concussions or traumatic brain injuries, repeated head impacts could have adverse effects on the brain.
Amanda Kopel has been advocating for a ban on heading the ball in Scotland since 2018 and hopes to see this practice discontinued globally after the 2030 World Cup.
