A dedicated group of more than 20 volunteers gathered at the Tom Weir mountain garden in Balmaha last week to participate in a ‘Make a Difference’ Day organized by Friends of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs. The volunteers, full of enthusiasm, spent the day tidying up the garden and its surroundings, as well as planting 150 heathers under the clear blue sky and shining sun. John Urquhart, chair of the Friends group, expressed gratitude towards the volunteers for their hard work and also thanked the National Park Authority for providing tools and equipment. The Oak Tree Inn generously provided a delicious lunch for all participants, which was enjoyed by everyone.
Interestingly, there was hardly any litter to clean up, proving the area’s cleanliness. The Friends group successfully secured a Volunteering Matters Action Earth Grant, with grant funding from Naturescot, to support the planting of new vegetation. Following the productive morning, some volunteers joined John on a guided walk along the West Highland shore-side path and back to Balmaha over the Druim Nan Buraich. The Tom Weir’s Rest picnic site, which opened a decade ago, is now in need of new wooden interpretation panels. The Friends are in the process of seeking funding for their replacement.
