East Kilbride MSP Collette Stevenson has praised the Scottish Government for rectifying what she called a “disgraceful wrong” by the UK Labour government with the introduction of a new payment to support older people with energy bills. Cabinet Secretary Shirley Anne Somerville announced the new support payment, which will be rolled out alongside the SNP Government’s new Pension Age Winter Heating Payment next year.
Stevenson highlighted that Scottish Labour MPs sided with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer in backing the cut of the Winter Fuel Payment for 900,000 Scots at Westminster, while SNP MPs voted against it. She criticised the Labour party for not living up to their promises, especially in light of their cut to the Winter Fuel Payment, which she described as a betrayal.
