Edinburgh’s most dangerous areas have recently been uncovered as a security firm, Church Support Services, conducted a survey on crime in the Scottish capital. The firm examined police data to identify the city’s crime hotspots, shedding light on areas with higher crime rates. Despite being a vibrant hub for tourists and renowned for its attractions and historical landmarks, the city centre emerged as the top contender on the list. With over 3,461 incidents of crimes of dishonesty recorded, accounting for more than 37% of all crimes in the city centre, it is evident that the area faces significant security challenges. Following closely behind is Leith, where the crime rate has surged to 106.9 crimes per 1000 residents. Crimes of dishonesty, especially shoplifting, topped the list with 894 incidents, alongside notable figures in motor vehicle offences, criminal damage, and drug offenses. Sighthill and Gorgie secured the third spot on the list, marked by a high crime rate of 102.2 crimes per 1000 residents. This residential area, home to Hearts of Midlothian, witnessed alarming statistics in crimes of dishonesty and violent assault. Almond and Portobello, as well as Craigmillar, also ranked fourth and fifth, each facing their own unique security challenges. Almond, comprising various residential areas and Edinburgh’s major international airport, recorded a crime rate in line with the city-wide average. However, Portobello and Craigmillar faced significant issues with crimes of dishonesty, motor vehicle crimes and criminal damage, highlighting the need for enhanced security measures in these regions. Craigentinny and Duddingston, known for their lush surroundings and green spaces, also reported concerning figures in crimes of dishonesty, motor vehicle offenses, and criminal damage. Meanwhile, Fountainbridge and Craiglockhart maintained a stable crime rate, with crimes of dishonesty and motor vehicle crimes being the primary concerns. There has also been a worrying increase in violent assault incidents in the area. Overall, the report underscores the importance of addressing crime hotspots and implementing robust security measures across Edinburgh to ensure the safety and well-being of residents and visitors alike.
