Four Scots M&S stores install lifesaving new defibrillators as part of charity partnership

Four Scottish M&S stores have recently implemented new defibrillators in collaboration with various organisations to enhance community safety. The British Heart Foundation, Resuscitation Council UK, St John Ambulance, and NHS ambulance services have teamed up with the retailer to register all defibrillators on The Circuit, a national defibrillator network. This initiative aims to assist emergency services in locating the nearest defibrillator in case of a cardiac arrest situation.

Cumbernauld and Hamilton in Lanarkshire have joined the existing defibrillator installations at the Forge Parkhead and Port Glasgow branches. The importance of quick responses during a cardiac arrest is emphasised by the British Heart Foundation, which reports over 30,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests annually in the UK. The chance of survival decreases by up to 10% every minute without CPR and defibrillation.

As part of their charity partnership, M&S donates 1p to the British Heart Foundation every time a customer selects the charity and shops with their Sparks card. Since June 2020, donations exceeding £80,000 have funded research, clinical trials, and CPR training. David Anderson, M&S Regional Manager for Central Scotland, expressed the company’s commitment to supporting the local community through timely interventions during emergencies.

Judy O’Sullivan, Director of Health Innovation Programmes at the British Heart Foundation, commended M&S for their collaboration in potentially saving lives through the defibrillator registration on The Circuit. This initiative enhances community resilience by providing crucial information to ambulance services in critical situations. Additionally, the British Heart Foundation offers free online CPR training through RevivR.

The installation of defibrillators in these M&S stores highlights the importance of prompt action in life-threatening situations. By partnering with leading organisations in healthcare and emergency response, M&S demonstrates a commitment to community well-being and safety. This proactive approach could serve as a model for other retailers and businesses looking to make a difference in their local communities.
