Police at HMP Perth have been actively working to tackle illegal activities such as drug smuggling and threatening behaviour within the prison walls. The patrols undertaken by officers are both high-profile and covert, aimed at deterring and detecting any illicit actions. Collaborating with the Scottish Prison Service, the police recently conducted operations on November 21 and 22 with specialist units like the Operational Support Unit and the Roads Policing Unit, alongside the local Community Policing Team.
During these operations, several individuals were dealt with for their involvement in criminal activities. A 30-year-old man was cautioned and charged for threatening and abusive behaviour, whilst a 40-year-old woman received a warning for a similar offence. Additionally, two men aged 24 and 26 were prevented from entering the prison after being detected by drug-sniffing dogs employed by the Scottish Prison Service.
Constable Scott Birrell, the police prison liaison officer, emphasised the significance of their partnership with the Scottish Prison Service in combating criminal activities behind bars. He highlighted the use of both visible and undercover operations, stressing their commitment to removing illegal substances from prisons and addressing associated criminal behaviour. Birrell encouraged the public to provide information or raise concerns regarding illegal activities within prisons.
