Nearly 8,000 former miners in Scotland receive boost today after pension scandal injustice

Nearly 8,000 former miners in Scotland are set to receive a boost in their pensions after years of injustice. The UK Government has announced that 7,844 Scottish mineworkers will see an average increase of £29 to their weekly pay as part of the Mineworkers’ Pension Scheme. This move comes after Chancellor Rachel Reeves confirmed in the Budget that the £1.5 billion mineworkers’ pension fund will be fully transferred to ex-miners and their families, putting an end to a longstanding unfair practice where the government took half of the pension surplus.

The uplift in pensions will mean an average 32 per cent rise in the annual pensions of nearly 112,000 former mineworkers and their dependents across the UK. Labour Energy Secretary Ed Miliband praised the government’s decision, stating that it corrects a decades-long injustice and ensures that ex-miners and their families receive the rightful benefits they deserve.

The Trustees of the Mineworkers’ Pension Scheme expressed their satisfaction with the progress, highlighting that the extra funds have been swiftly distributed to members thanks to the Government’s actions and the Scheme’s dedicated team. They also acknowledged the support of members and MPs in advocating for this change over the years. The government is now reviewing the surplus sharing agreement with the scheme trustees to ensure ongoing benefits for miners and their families in the future.

The Mineworkers’ Pension Scheme was affected by an arrangement made during the privatisation of British Coal in 1994, which saw the government taking half of any surplus from the pension scheme in exchange for pension increases linked to inflation. The investment reserve fund, established in 1992 with scheme profits, was scheduled to be returned to the government in 2029. The recent decision to return the fund to the miners reflects a commitment to rectifying past wrongs and providing long-term support to those who dedicated their lives to the mining industry.

In conclusion, the government’s decision to return the Mineworkers’ Pension Scheme funds to former miners and their families marks a significant step towards addressing historical injustices and ensuring financial security for those who contributed to the mining sector. The swift action taken to rectify this situation is a positive development that will have a lasting impact on the lives of thousands of individuals who have waited for this resolution for many years.
