Two lecturers from West Lothian College have invented a practical teaching aid to assist electrical apprentices in dealing with a potentially dangerous issue. Thomas Barlow and Scott Cavanagh developed an interactive fault board that provides young learners with the opportunity to learn how to test for neutral current diversion (NCD). The inspiration for this innovative resource came from SELECT, the largest construction trade body in the country, which is actively providing resources and information on the issue.
Thomas and Scott utilized materials they had on hand to create the interactive board, with the main component being a repurposed whiteboard. The aim was to offer a hands-on experience for apprentices, enhancing their practical learning alongside theoretical knowledge. The duo emphasised the importance of practical training to ensure learners gain valuable experience in addition to classroom studies.
The concept has garnered interest from other colleges, with Scolmore, a SELECT Associate Member company, offering support for production to distribute the units across Scotland. Scott highlighted that the board allows learners to simulate testing for NCD in a controlled environment, reinforcing theoretical concepts and providing practical insights for diagnosing faults. Additionally, it opens up possibilities for multi-trade training, enabling different professionals to detect and address faults they may encounter in their respective fields.
NCD poses a significant risk when protective measures fail, resulting in current diversion through exposed metal fixings and potentially leading to fire or explosions, particularly in multi-occupancy buildings. SELECT has developed a range of practical resources to educate members, apprentices, and trainees on NCD, including posters, digital tools, and pocket-sized guides.
