Celtic Legend’s Daughter Raises £25k for Cancer Charity in Honor of Father’s Last Wish
The daughter of a beloved Celtic icon, renowned for scoring 109 goals in 245 appearances, has raised an impressive £25k for a cancer charity in memory of her late father’s final desire. After the passing of the 66-year-old Celtic hero Frank McGarvey on New Year’s Day last year, Jenny Kane has been on a mission to raise awareness about pancreatic cancer, as reported by Glasgow Live.
McGarvey, a celebrated figure at Parkhead, started experiencing severe pain in 2022, prompting frequent visits to doctors who initially struggled to identify the root cause. A CT scan eventually revealed the presence of pancreatic cancer after McGarvey, suffering from chest pains, loss of appetite, and weight loss, was prescribed pain relief and indigestion medication. Jenny disclosed, “Dad visited the doctors multiple times in spring 2022 and was misdiagnosed. As a former footballer, he had a high pain threshold, but the agony he endured was unbearable.”
Despite the challenges, Jenny has been tirelessly working with Pancreatic Cancer Action Scotland to shine a spotlight on the disease that claimed her father’s life, following his passing. With a survival rate of less than 8% over five years, pancreatic cancer is considered one of the deadliest common cancers. Unfortunately, many cases go undiagnosed until it’s too late, highlighting the critical importance of early detection.
Jenny shared her father’s dying wish to raise awareness of pancreatic cancer, with the goal of preventing others from facing the same fate. Their efforts have led to a successful fundraising campaign, resulting in £25,000 raised for World Pancreatic Cancer Day. Expressing gratitude for the funds raised, Sean McGarvey acknowledged the comfort it brings to the family and the meaningful impact in supporting the fight against pancreatic cancer.
