Nicky Campbell in Tears as Extradition of Alleged Historic Sex Abuse Teacher Delayed
Broadcaster Nicky Campbell was moved to tears upon learning that the extradition of retired teacher Iain Wares, accused of historic sex abuse, has once again been postponed. The 63-year-old expressed his heartbreak for the victims who have been waiting for justice, alleging they were sexually abused or physically assaulted by Wares in the 1960s and 1970s at Edinburgh Academy and Fettes College.
Campbell publicly called out Wares, now 85 and residing in Cape Town, urging him to stop evading justice and voluntarily return to Scotland to face the charges against him. The delays in the extradition process have caused prolonged distress to the alleged victims, with legal proceedings stretching over several years.
In a recent development, a scheduled court hearing was postponed due to the illness of a participating lawyer, pushing the next court date to March 6 next year. This delay is especially agonizing for the alleged victims awaiting closure. Despite the South African Ministry of Justice’s decision to expedite Wares’s extradition to Scotland following multiple charges, a single charge in South Africa has allowed for further delays in the process.
Nick Campbell, along with other survivors and former pupils of the schools where Wares taught, have been vocal about the need for justice to be served. Describing Wares as Scotland’s equivalent to Jimmy Savile, Campbell highlighted the extensive scale of alleged abuse perpetrated by Wares. The Crown Office has received reports from more than 120 former pupils regarding Wares’s misconduct.
Despite facing numerous charges and the submission of a warrant for his extradition based on 74 charges, additional alleged victims have since come forward. There are concerns that continued delays in the legal process may prevent Wares, who will turn 86 next year, from facing trial in Scotland.
Campbell emphasised the impact of Wares’s actions on the lives of many individuals and urged for a swift resolution to bring closure to the victims.
