Dumbarton artist’s work to be stored on the moon in unique out-of-this-world project
A talented Dumbarton artist, Lewis Deeney, is set to have his work launched into space and stored on the moon as part of an extraordinary project called the Lunar Codex initiative. This ambitious initiative consists of four time capsules filled with digital versions of art from Earth, with contributions from 30,000 artists, writers, film-makers, and musicians spanning 157 countries.
The purpose of the Lunar Codex project is to create a lasting record of human creativity for future generations to appreciate. Lewis Deeney shared his excitement about being part of this groundbreaking project, which came about through his participation in an exhibition in the USA at the 33 Contemporary Gallery in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Explaining his involvement, Lewis revealed, “The archive will be sent and stored on the moon as a time capsule for future humans or perhaps aliens! If humans manage to blow ourselves up and we revisit the moon in hundreds of years, they’ll find this archive and then find my painting on it, alongside around 30,000 other contemporary artists.”
Lewis submitted his painting, Awakening II, from his Chaos & Order Collection, created in 2021. This piece reflects his unique creative process that combines expressive abstraction with geometric structure, drawing inspiration from the universal symbol of the mandala that symbolizes interconnected unity and balance between opposites.
Expressing his hopes for extraterrestrial appreciation, Lewis said, “I hope aliens find it. I’d love to hear their thoughts on it. If geometry really is universal, then an off-planet species would have a connection to it.”
In addition to his lunar project involvement, Lewis will be showcasing his work at a forthcoming immersive art exhibition in Glasgow, offering attendees a multi-sensory experience through a combination of paintings, lights, projections, and mirrors.
The exhibition will take place at Saltspace Gallery on December 7 and 8, promising visitors an otherworldly experience akin to stepping into one of Lewis’s abstract, geometric paintings.
