A crowdfunding initiative to collect £25,000 for surgery for Charlie Allan, a Scottish stuntman who sustained a severe leg injury, has successfully reached its target with support from notable figures in Hollywood. Charlie Allan, aged 61, known for his work coordinating battle scenes in various major productions, fell 15 feet while constructing a home gym in Dumfries. This incident led to the formation of two blood clots behind his left knee, rendering him unable to walk more than a few feet or carry out daily activities.
The crowdfunding campaign aimed to gather £25,000 for crucial surgery overseas to address the damage caused by a blood clot stemming from the fall. Popular actors like Outlander star Sam Heughan and Hollywood A-lister Russell Crowe were among the supporters, with Crowe making a substantial donation of £5,000 and Heughan contributing £2,000. Additionally, Robert and Terri Irwin, the family of the late Steve Irwin, have also donated over £1,000 towards the cause.
Charlie Allan, who serves as the chief executive of the Clanranald Trust, a charity promoting Scottish culture and history, has collaborated on numerous film and TV projects. He shared a friendship with Russell Crowe during their work together on Gladiator and later collaborated on Robin Hood. The recent crowdfunding success will enable Charlie to undergo surgery abroad to rectify the complications arising from the blood clot.
Providing insights into the accident, Charlie explained that while constructing access to his home gym, his left leg gave way, resulting in ligament tears and subsequent formation of blood clots. Despite initially improving, he experienced excruciating pain days later, leading to numbness and discolouration in his leg. Medical professionals advised urgent surgery, which unfortunately encountered setbacks due to his medical history of deep vein thrombosis.
Following unsuccessful local treatment, Charlie’s wife, Chara, discovered a specialised procedure called Endovascular Thrombectomy that could address his condition but was not available through the NHS. This treatment, costing £25,000, is planned to be conducted in Hungary or Germany once the fundraiser reaches its goal.
Charlie’s commitment to promoting Scotland’s heritage through combat re-enactment has seen his involvement in various renowned productions such as Outlander, Gladiator, and King Arthur. His resilience in the face of adversity and the overwhelming support from the community and notable personalities highlight the unity and generosity prevalent in times of need.
