A Scottish youth football team is making headlines for their unique initiative to save the planet while scoring goals. The Alloa Saints have partnered with local environmental groups to launch the “trees for goals” initiative, where a new tree is planted every time the team scores a goal. With over 1000 goals already scored this season, the team is showing how teamwork can make a positive impact on both football and the environment.
The project is in support of Forth Climate Forest’s ambitious goal to plant 16 million trees in the Forth Valley area within the next decade. Every goal scored by the Saints team from the beginning of the season up to National Tree Week is counted as another tree planted. This initiative not only helps the environment but also educates young players about the importance of native trees in enhancing biodiversity, managing flooding, creating wildlife habitats, and fostering a connection with nature.
Paul Robertson, Chairman of Alloa Saints Football Club, expressed pride in the players’ involvement in the initiative, highlighting how they are learning that their actions on the pitch can have a far-reaching impact on the community and the environment. The project has garnered enthusiastic responses from the players, with one young player joyfully acknowledging how scoring a goal contributes to planting a tree.
In partnership with Forth Valley Climate Action Hub, The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) Scotland, and Forth Climate Forest, the initiative is empowering young people and their families to take meaningful environmental action. The success of the project in Forth Valley is paving the way for potential expansion across Scotland in the coming years with support from the Scottish Football Association.
As junior players gear up to kick off the tree planting this month, the lasting impact of the initiative is set to benefit not just the football pitch but also the wider community. The Alloa Saints are setting a commendable example of how local initiatives can drive transformative environmental change by combining the love for sport with a passion for sustainability.
