A “smirking” paedophile is facing a likely jail term after pleading guilty to sexually abusing two girls in Airdrie and Coatbridge. Gerald O’Hare, 58, appeared at Airdrie Sheriff Court, where it was revealed that the victims have endured mental health issues since being targeted by him during the 1980s and 90s. O’Hare admitted to charges of lewd, indecent, and libidinous behaviour towards the two girls.
The court heard that O’Hare exposed himself and performed sexual acts in front of the first victim multiple times between 1982 and 1985. Similarly, he behaved in a similar manner towards the second girl regularly between 1995 and the following year, also subjecting her to inappropriate touching. Prosecution lawyer Sarah Healing stated that both victims described O’Hare smirking at them during the abuse, with the second victim expressing extreme fear of him.
Ms Healing disclosed that the second victim has struggled with mental health issues, including post-traumatic stress disorder diagnosed five years ago, as a result of the abuse. She reported the incidents to the police last year. The first victim, who has battled depression and anxiety, decided to come forward after hearing about the reporting of historical abuse.
O’Hare, formerly of Airdrie and Coatbridge and now residing in Dumfries, was placed on the sex offenders’ register, and his sentencing was postponed for background reports. Despite allowing O’Hare to remain on bail, Sheriff Paul Haran emphasized that custody is a primary consideration in this case.
In a sombre courtroom atmosphere, the distressing accounts of the victims and the gravity of the offences painted a stark picture of the lasting impact of sexual abuse.
