North Lanarkshire Council has announced that the Motherwell Civic Theatre and Concert Hall will be demolished due to significant structural issues identified within the building. The council revealed that 95% of the roof contains Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC), posing a High to Critical risk level. The estimated costs to replace and repair this section of the roof range from £10.5 million to £11.65 million, which the council deems financially unsustainable.
The decision to demolish the venue was made during a meeting of the policy and strategy committee. Council leader Jim Logue expressed the challenges faced in maintaining the building, stating that several RAAC panels exhibited damage and signs of water ingress that could compromise the roof’s integrity. The closure of the building since September last year has led to shows and performances being relocated to alternative venues.
While acknowledging the historical and cultural significance of the theatre and concert hall, Logue highlighted the necessity of demolishing the building as the most economically viable option. Plans for future cultural facilities, including those within the Ravenscraig Hub, are being considered to continue providing cultural experiences for the community.
Councillor Kenneth Duffy, representing Motherwell South East & Ravenscraig, expressed sadness over the loss of the venue but emphasised the importance of prioritizing residents’ safety. Looking ahead, he welcomed proposals for integrating cultural offerings into the new Ravenscraig Hub, aiming to create new opportunities for arts and culture in the area.
Campaigners had previously called for the reopening of the Motherwell Concert Hall and Theatre, gathering to advocate for preserving the venue. Their efforts underscored the significance of the venue in the community for artistic expression, cultural celebrations, and mental well-being.
The council assures that community input will be sought in the development of the Ravenscraig Hub to shape the cultural landscape of the area.
