South Lanarkshire charities were celebrated as winners at the Third Sector Awards held in Blantyre recently. The event, hosted by Voluntary Action South Lanarkshire (VASLan) at The Parkville Hotel, aims to honour the exceptional contributions of individuals and groups who have made a significant impact in their communities. From addressing social isolation to developing green spaces, the awards recognise the profound effects of charitable work across South Lanarkshire.
The ceremony featured moving speeches and the presentation of awards across various categories including Volunteer of the Year, Grassroots Organisation of the Year, and Young Person Achievement Award. Among the recipients was Cambuslang-based charity LEAP, which secured multiple accolades. Gilbert “Gilly” Feron, chairperson at LEAP, was awarded the Community Champion Award for his dedication to improving the lives of older people over the past three decades. LEAP also clinched the Grassroots Organisation Award for their continuous support to thousands of individuals annually.
Another notable winner was Agape Wellbeing, awarded the Partnership & Collaboration Award for their mental health and wellbeing initiatives in East Kilbride, in collaboration with The Village Centre. Drew McKinney, CEO at Agape Wellbeing, expressed delight at the honour and emphasised the importance of raising awareness about the impactful work being done within local communities. These awards serve to highlight the vital role charities play in supporting and uplifting vulnerable individuals and areas.
Lauren McKechnie, chairperson at VASLan, emphasised the significance of acknowledging the tireless efforts of individuals and organisations within the third sector.
