A project to preserve the Scottish Women’s Institute archives ahead of their relocation to Dumfries has received a funding boost. The SWI is collaborating with The Crichton Trust on a £15 million redevelopment plan to transform a former laundry building on the estate into exhibition galleries, workshops, archive rooms, and the organization’s national offices.
The National Lottery Heritage Fund has awarded a grant of £127,175 to the SWI to safeguard its archive and collection for future generations. Mary Burney, SWI’s national president, expressed gratitude for the support, highlighting the importance of preserving the historical items held by the organization. The archive documents women’s contributions to Scottish society over the past century, showcasing their involvement in communities, decision-making processes, and cultural traditions.
Without this funding, the collection, which includes handicrafts, documents, photos, and Royal correspondence, would have been at risk of being lost. In addition to conserving existing items, the SWI plans to train volunteers to collect oral histories from current members for preservation as podcasts. The “Preserving the Past to Inspire the Future” project is underway in preparation for the SWI’s collection and archive to be housed in a new visitor learning centre at the Crichton in 2027, named The Laundry.
This new facility will serve as a dynamic hub offering exhibitions, courses, workshops, and classes based on the SWI and The Crichton’s collections and archives.
