A groundbreaking initiative has been unveiled to combat the housing shortage in the northern regions of Scotland. SSE Transmission has announced a £20 billion investment in upgrading the power network, which will also facilitate the construction of over 1,000 homes in the area. These houses are intended to accommodate the workforce involved in the electricity transmission upgrades, with plans for them to be made available to local communities once the projects are finished.
The housing development is expected to alleviate the housing challenges faced by the region while creating job opportunities and providing significant economic benefits to the local areas. By 2030, around 400 homes will be built in Aberdeenshire, alongside a similar number in the Highlands and other parts of northern Scotland. Collaborating with councils, housing associations, and various organisations, SSEN Transmission is committed to supporting the delivery of these new homes.
The transmission network upgrades in the north of Scotland are crucial for enhancing energy security and supporting the UK’s net zero goals. This grid enhancement is essential for driving progress towards renewable energy targets in Scotland and the UK, thereby accelerating the company’s efforts to meet the 2030 offshore wind connection deadlines. SSEN Transmission has established a £10 million regional fund to assist community groups, with plans for future community funds exceeding £100 million, pending governmental approval. Grants of up to £5,000 are currently available for projects promoting health and wellbeing in communities across various regions.
