Scotrail is intensifying its efforts to combat ticket fraud by implementing a major crackdown on passengers attempting to avoid paying the correct fare for their journeys. The rail operator has revealed plans to escalate ticket fraud detection through a series of undisclosed strategies. Starting this month, an additional 69 ticket inspectors will be recruited to make it increasingly challenging for potential fraudsters to evade fare payment.
Every year, an estimated £10 million of public funds are lost to fare evasion and fraud on ScotRail services. This substantial amount could otherwise be redirected back into enhancing the railway network. To combat this issue, ScotRail is implementing various measures aimed at preventing and identifying fare evasion practices. These include heightened ticket inspections at stations, increased manpower, and the utilization of advanced data analytics to pinpoint fraudulent activities.
Common types of fare evasion encountered by ScotRail include individuals claiming to be travelling shorter distances than their tickets permit, misuse of railcards, and exploitation of self-service ticket machines. To tackle these issues, ScotRail is employing a multi-faceted approach, incorporating increased vigilance, regular audits, and swift investigations into any suspicious activities. Additionally, the rail operator has bolstered its revenue protection team by deploying more personnel, automatic ticket gate staff, and mobile Revenue Protection Officers to conduct thorough checks on fare compliance.
Revenue Protection Officers are authorised to conduct comprehensive ticket inspections, set up temporary barriers at stations, and collect information for further investigation if fare evasion is suspected. In cases of confirmed fraud, ScotRail can recover unpaid fares, seek civil recovery, or collaborate with law enforcement agencies for criminal prosecution. These stringent measures have already yielded positive results, with ScotRail recovering £25,000 in fraudulent travel fees over the past year.
Phil Campbell, ScotRail’s Customer Operations Director, emphasised the importance of combating ticket fraud to uphold the integrity of the fare system and ensure fair travel conditions for genuine passengers. By deterring fare evasion, ScotRail aims to safeguard public funds and reinvest in service enhancements for the benefit of all passengers.
In conclusion, Scotrail’s proactive approach to tackling ticket fraud through enhanced monitoring and enforcement demonstrates their commitment to maintaining a fair fare system and protecting the interests of honest passengers. By cracking down on fraudulent activities, ScotRail not only preserves public funds but also fosters a more equitable travel environment for all passengers.
